ITW GSE transitioned from combustion engine-based ground power units—which provide electricity to aircraft while parked on the ground—to battery-powered solutions using Nissan battery technology. This shift significantly reduced emissions, lowered operating and maintenance costs, and resulted in quieter, more efficient airport operations worldwide. The result is a better working environment for ground handlers and a greener, more cost-effective way to power parked aircraft.

BeePlanet Factory and Q-Energy launched a 300 kW energy storage system in Spain, integrating repurposed Nissan EV batteries into a solar power plant. This project directly addresses the growing need for grid stabilization, offering a 2-hour capacity to balance energy supply and demand while maximizing the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources. Demonstrating the viability of second-life batteries for large-scale energy storage, this initiative not only reduces waste and champions a circular economy but also paves the way for future advancements in sustainable energy solutions, marking a significant step towards a cleaner energy future.
Vestergaard Company
Vestergaard Company has worked with Nissan for 7 years on electrification of our products. Aviation accounts for about 3% of all carbon emissions in the world, so anything that can be done to reduce this number is sought after. Handling aircrafts on the ground account for about 12-16% of the emissions, so there is a drive to eliminate this part. Vestergaard Company has developed a hybrid version of its flagship deicer the Elephant® BETA, where a Nissan battery has been added to the Volvo-based deicer, and the unit can now be operated fully electric. The savings in carbon emissions of the deicing operation are up to 85%.
Loccioni
Since 2008 Loccioni cooperates with Nissan in the LEAF Community, an open-air laboratory for the development of innovative technologies for energy saving and sustainability. Nissan is part of Loccioni’s smart micro-grid with its 20 electrical vehicles and with 24 used Nissan LEAF EV batteries that power the first second life storage system in Italy.
Enel
In Melilla, an innovative system utilizing 48 used LEAF batteries and 30 new ones, helps provide stability for over 90,000 residents. Isolated from any national grid, the city and its residents entirely depend on a single thermal power plant operated by a subsidiary of multinational energy company Enel.

Nissan partners with Enel to launch innovative “Second Life” storage system for used electric car batteries
Paris, France – Nissan and Enel have partnered to launch the Second Life project. Combining used Nissan electric vehicle batteries at a conventional power plant in Melilla, Spain, operated by the Enel Group's Spanish subsidiary, Endesa, the project enhances grid stability to help meet the needs of an isolated network.
The Leaf Community Loccioni - a micro grid, full electric powered by renewable energy sources
The Loccioni microgrid is a functional example of a peer-to-peer power network, distributing energy between Loccioni buildings within a 2 km of future. Over 90% of the energy produced is self-consumed, increasing self-sufficiency to 55%.
This local system emphasizes the advantages of diversifying and integrating renewable energy sources to enhance reliability and reduce CO2 emissions, improving the community's environmental sustainability.
